What Is A Studio Apartment?

Generally speaking, a studio apartment is a single-room apartment that combines the bedroom, living room and kitchen in one space, with a separate bathroom. Today there are a few different studio apartment layouts, but traditionally it tends to be a single living area with an adjacent bathroom. Studio apartments differ from one-bedroom apartments in that your living room and bedroom are in a shared space.

While these apartments are a more affordable option, it can be challenging to figure out how to make a small space both functional and beautiful. More and more individuals of all ages are opting for these small living spaces for many reasons. Suffice it to say, they are no longer just for college students and no longer just a means of having a place to sleep. But in fact they can be enjoyed fully.

Maximizing Studio Apartments

The trick is to understand the size of your studio apartment and make it count. A studio may only have around 300 square feet and so you need to maximize that space as much as possible. You’ll want to focus on making sure there are different zones in the room to create a sense of separation between the bedroom, living room and kitchen.

Multifunctional Living

Investing in furniture that can serve multiple purposes will help save on space. A coffee table that doubles as a storage unit or a foldable dining table are excellent options. If you live in a micro apartment which is typically even smaller than your standard studio, you may want to consider investing in a murphy bed. This sort of bed is perfect for making the most of limited space in studio apartments.

Ideally you’ll want to look for furniture that can serve more than one purpose and make sure there is enough sleeping space, seating space, and storage space. Room dividers are also a great option when it comes to studio apartments as they can be used to section off different areas while still keeping an open and airy feel.

Get Creative With Room Dividers

Let’s start with one of the most popular ways to create that divide in a room. Room dividers or divider screens which are sometimes installed or free standing–are such a fantastic and versatile way to create a barrier between spaces.

The style options are endless when it comes to room dividers! Whether you’re interested in industrial steel partition, midcentury wood paneling or even foldable and suspended room dividers–the possibilities are endless. Check out these amazing options from Wayfair.

Here are a few ways to divide a space:

Use Higher Quality Drapes

Flowy drapes and curtains are very much trending as a gorgeous way to divide a space. There’s a way to style your space to give some softness to a room as opposed to a barrier. Choosing the right drapes and curtains for your space can make a world of difference. With drapes and curtains you can create any sort of atmosphere that you’d like. Definitely a classic choice.

Using curtains and drapes is a great cheap way to divide up a space. Curtains are relatively inexpensive and come in a variety of styles, materials, and colors. Plus, they can be easily customized to fit any size window or door frame. Drapes also come in a range of price points, so you can find something that fits your budget.

With either curtains or drapes, you can easily separate a room into two distinct spaces without having to spend too much money. In addition, the materials used for curtains and drapes are relatively lightweight, so they don’t take up too much space and can be easily transported if needed.

Bookshelves/Display Shelves

One way to quickly divide a space is to use furniture or other objects. This works well for apartments, offices, and living rooms where you can move pieces of furniture around to create different sections within the room. For example, if you have a large living area that serves as both a living room and workspace, try rearranging the furniture to make it into two distinct areas.

I’ve noticed a rise in these very specific minimalist wall mounted bookshelves and display shelves. While I’m not the biggest fan of this style, they do make for a great display shelf. Bookshelves and bookcases make are another great way to create space especially if you want to make yourself a cozy corner. If you’re looking to make a partition wall then you can easily do so with something as traditional as a regular book case.

Use a couch or other large furnishing to create a natural barrier between the two spaces, then add smaller objects like rugs, lamps, and end tables to further differentiate the sections. This is an effective way to quickly divide up a room without any major remodeling or construction work.

Feature Wall

Sometimes a feature wall can be a great way to designate space in an area. It’s a particularly bold feature and emphasizes the space. However, feature or accent walls don’t have to be particularly bold, they can act to highlight a space. Compared to other parts of the living area, it can create the illusion of separate spaces.

And it does so without having to do much else. It can be done in such a way that is incredibly visually appealing. Think about what you may want to work with to create it, wallpaper, paint, wall paneling or all three? Elevate your small living space with this great technique!
