7 Best Tips for Your Next Redecorating Project

Are you in the process of planning a redecorating project? If so, congratulations! Redecorating can be a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to give your home a fresh new look. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind before you get started. In this blog post, we will share 10 tips that will help make your redecorating project go smoothly.

I’m in the process of redecorating two different spaces in my home, the bedroom and the dining room. And in the midst of it all, I realized how daunting it can all be. So, I thought I’d share my top 10 tips for anyone who is in the process of redecorating a space.

redecorating plan

1. Start with a Plan:

I call this initial part space planning. It’s one of the first steps to doing anything. Whether you’re redecorating your entryway or your living room, it’s important to plan it out. In fact, there is so much to consider before even going any further. From the size of the room you’re redecorating to the interior design style, to how much natural light enters the space. Once you have a plan nailed down, figuring out the rest becomes considerably easier.

Beyond choosing what sort of atmosphere you want from the space, it’s important to know what you need space for too. Do you want an area for books or a space to watch tv or even toy storage for your kids. Is it going to be important to you to be able to display a decorative accent or two in this space? While it may seem so nuanced, there are a lot of things that a living space requires when from you when you really think about it. All of these things should be considered in the framework of your plan.

First consider these questions down below:

Intention: What do I want to achieve with this room?

Purpose: What is it that I need from this space?

Problem Solving: What are some common problems within the space?

Atmosphere: How do I want to feel when I’m in this space?

Function: What should this space function as?

Organization: What do I need room for in this space?

2. Measure Twice:

It’s important to take accurate measurements before purchasing any new furniture or accessories for the room you are redecorating. From the wall shelving, to the size of windows and window treatments, to the wall your dresser is against, measuring is key to creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing space. So bust out that tape measure! Figure out the dimensions for your floor plan and see what you have to work with.

Before you start pulling out furniture and shopping for decor, have a plan in place so that you can create an organized and cohesive space. Consider the layout of your room and what you want to achieve with the space. Think about which pieces of furniture will fit comfortably and make sure that anything you buy will be proportionate with the size of the room. Don’t forget to take accurate measurements so that you can ensure everything fits properly.

3. Create A Mood Board:

Creating a mood board can be a great way to visualize the design elements you want to include in your space. Choose paint colors, fabrics and patterns, furniture and different interior styles that you like. Then create a board with images of furniture, accent pieces and other decor items that will help you achieve the desired look. This will give you an idea of a cohesive style that you gravitate towards also. I personally love Pinterest for this step.

Personal style isn’t always easy to define and it takes a lot of trial and error to get the desired look you want. If you’re having trouble deciding on a personal style, try exploring new ideas and different looks by looking at interior design blogs or magazines. Once you figure out what speaks to you, create a mood board that reflects your personal taste and aesthetic.

Do you live with family members or roomates? And do you have the whole room to work with or just one side? These are important questions to ask yourself. And if you’re a couple in a new home trying to figure how to redecorate a space, then it’s important to consider your partner’s wants for the space as well. Is there an interior style that encompasses both of your tastes? Is there a focal point in either one of your home furnishings that you can build around? This could be a copious amount of records or art pieces, for example. It’s important to find a style that works for both of you and create something that everyone in the home can be happy with.

Ask yourself these questions:

What interior design styles do I /my partner like?

What mood(s) should I be trying to set in my space?

If I had to choose an inteiror style that I connected to which would that be?

How can I mix and match colors and textures effectively?

What furniture pieces will work best with the size of the room?

Are there any unique items that could add character to my space?

redecorating budget

4. Set a Budget

It’s easy to get carried away when redecorating a space, especially if you don’t have a budget in mind. It can be easy to want to buy new furniture and replace old ones, But, before you start shopping around, decide what your budget is and try to stick to it. And if you are working with a small budget, getting really specific about that budget is the best thing you can do.

This budget will encompass big ticket items that will be a bit more of an investment than the others. Maybe that looks like a bedframe or that beautiful mirror you’ve been lusting over or a statement piece that will make the room. And the good thing about redecorating a small room is that you can keep new furniture purchases to a minimum.

It should also include items that you can get away with being more affordable like picture frames or table lamps, things that you know you can shop around for. I love facebook marketplace for items like a dining table, coffee table, area rugs and any other piece of furniture that can sometimes be a bit pricey.

Also I’m not sure if most people know that you can really find some furnishings in good shape at second hand stores too! And if they’re not in the best shape, they maybe ones that you can instill new life into with a fresh coat of paint. So try wrapping your head around the idea of always buying shiny new things. Sometimes there are hidden gems in second hand items.

Lastly you should think about where in your budget you can save a little bit more. One of the easiest ways to save on redecorating is look at what you already have and give it new life. Maybe even give some of those items a different purpose like a small table that can now be your bedside table or nightstand. Perhaps you can save a ton by spending a little bit on supply items you may need for any d.i.y. projects you plan on doing like a bedside table or end table.

Consider these three categories within your budget:

Splurge/Investment Items

Items you can purchase affordably

D.I.Y. projects you can make

5.Visualize The Space

I’ve talked about some of my favorite online tools to use for space planning. Using room design software online really helps to visualize what the space will look like in a way that is three dimensional. This really is the best part of the process, because yes you can throw caution to the wind and just decorate and buy whatever you like, but these tools really allow for great foresight and will probably save you the headache, time and money.

There are so many amazing programs that really have the ability to make design renderings look lifelike. I personally use and love Roomstyler, Foyr and Sweet Home 3D, but there are many other options available as well. So start designing the first room you’ll be tackling.

6. Set A Start Date

Once you have a plan in place, it is time to set a start date. Having a starting date will help keep you motivated and on track. It will also assist in planning the timeline of when you want to finish each step. Break up your project into smaller tasks and set realistic deadlines. But the most important thing is getting the process started.

Some of us are perfectionists, but being able to complete a project that you set out to do is one of the most gratifying feelings imaginable. Giving yourself some sort of timeline will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed or demotivated. Start small and start soon.

7.Take Your Time

I know this seems totally contradictory to the previous tip, but I’m a firm believer that taking your time is one of the most important tips when it comes to decorating any space. Don’t rush the process—take your time to really assess what pieces you want for each room and think about how they will interact with one another.

If what you want is to really find beautiful unique items that tell a story, be patient. Not to mention sometimes you have to sell old items to make room for new ones and that can take time. If you know there’s a new floor lamp you must have, then put your old one on Offer Up and just wait. It’s always best to head good advice when it comes to time and money in this process.

Make sure the pieces you bring home are things you truly love and will use for years to come—not just trends that you’ll get sick of in six months. You don’t have to rush the process and make it all happen immediately. That being said, no space will ever look totally perfect, and you learn and evolve along the way. So don’t be afraid to make mistakes and have fun with the process. Good luck, and enjoy!
