Over Decorating or Over-Decorating?

We live in a day and age where maximalism seems to be favored and the more stuff you have the better. That is even the case with holiday decorating as you probably know. You definitely don’t need to partake in the excessiveness that social media keeps regurgitating unless you are in fact a maximalist and that is your personal style.

Small Space Awareness

Additionally, living in a small space will make you really conscious of every inch of used space. Add a Christmas tree or Christmas decorating to the mix and it can leave you feeling really stumped about what sort of decorating ideas to go with in your home.

However, Christmas decorating doesn’t have to be all that complicated. And if you live in a rental then keep reading for Christmas apartment decorations and decor ideas that will give you that same serotonin boosting holiday spirit!

1. Bring On The Christmas Tree

Nothing says cozy Christmas like being in the midst of a Christmas tree. And obviously a Christmas tree in the living room is one way to do it. But if having a full size Christmas tree isn’t for you or isn’t feasible for your space, then why not go for small space friendly tabletop Christmas trees. From a real live mini tree to sisal bottle brush miniature trees and even cute modern ceramic trees–there are many ways to bring Christmas trees into your home.

2. Add Other Elements of Nature

A Christmas tree isn’t the only way to make your home feel in the holiday spirit. You can still incorporate some beautiful garland. I love a garland and the simplicity of just adding them to window sills or fireplace mantel. I would also add some twigs and pine cone decorations to the garland as well.

A faux wreath is another simple decor item that is simple and decorative enough for your front door. A Christmas wreath is also a fun D.I.Y. project if you’re in the mood for some festive D.I.Y. decoration ideas.

Another great way to add some greenery is adding a Christmas bouquet to your tables or entryway. Personally I love going to Trader Joes for some seasonal Eucalyptus and some other beautiful plants and putting them together in a vase. It’s an easy and small way to add some greenery to your space.

3. Get Cozy with Textiles

Fabrics like velvet and wool are not only comfortable to touch, but they also add visual interest and texture to a space. Incorporate these materials into your winter decor by draping them over furniture or using them as throw blankets and pillows. If you’ve been waiting to switch out some of your lighter fabrics, now’s the perfect time!

The living room and bedroom curtains can really contribute to the general feeling in the room. Add some thicker drapes like these ones from West Elm. Fabrics can definitely elevate a room instantly and if you don’t currently have any, then now’s a great time to hang some!

4. Layer Up the Lighting

Lighting is key when it comes to setting the mood in your apartment. During the colder months, we tend to spend more time indoors so it’s important to make sure your space is well-lit, but also that the lights are comfortable. Swap out any harsh lightbulbs for softer, warmer ones and consider getting some beautifully fragrant candles too.

Candles are also great for creating a relaxing ambiance and of course the flickering of candle light is just oh so cozy. Personally, during the colder months I tend to be drawn to more rustic scents like pine and balsam fir, cedarwood and of course silver birch. These scents always make me feel like I’m in a winter wonderland surrounded by fresh trees.

But if candles aren’t for you then I also have been loving these flameless candles that are both battery operated and remote controlled. These are totally the best faux candles online and it’s one of my favorite purchases this season. And speaking of artificial lights, mini string lights are really pretty to add to your cozy atmosphere as well.

5. Bring in Some Warmth with Rugs

Rugs are not only great for protecting your floors—they can also help make your space feel cozier and more inviting. Choose plush rug for an added dose of comfort. You can also find rugs in a variety of colors and patterns so they can double as decor! I have always loved the look of faux sheepskin rugs layered over other rugs. I find plush rugs also act as accents to a living space particularly when layered.

6. Add Some Throw Blankets and Pillows

Throw blankets and pillows are must-haves for any cozy apartment! They not only add extra warmth and comfort but they can also be used as decor when you’re not snuggled up under them. Opt for fleece blankets, flannel, even a nice warm quilt for an extra cozy touch. And when it comes to pillows, more is definitely better—mix and match different sizes, shapes, and colors for a fun yet functional look!

7.Add Some Festive Decor Where You Can

Now you don’t have to add Christmas decorations to every inch of your space, but little touches here and there can really make a big impact in your space. Recently I saw a sweet little ribbon trick from @prettyinthepines in which she would add gift like ribbon to her framed photos and wall art. This made them look like gifts! I thought it was a great way to decorate the gallery wall that she had on her wall. Shelby also made these cute photo framed ornaments that just added a lovely touch to her Christmas tree.

Personalizing decorations no matter what time of the year is an important thing to note about your interior decorating. Home decor can often feel so trendy or dated and the one thing that can ensure that your style will stand the test of time, is to make it feel more like you. And cute personalized Christmas decor is a great way to do this!

You could even hang up a cozy-looking stocking to add some extra winter cheer on display to your spaces! No matter how you decide to decorate, just make sure you’re comfortable and have everything you need for the cold months ahead. After all, the cozier your apartment is, the more enjoyable it’ll be! So what are you waiting for

8.Embrace Minimalist Christmas Decor

Minimalism is a great way to live if you’re home is relatively small. And ironically enough, there are many minimalist Christmas decorations that I myself got my eye on. I just love the simplicity of these minimalist decor accents that really catch your eye. From garland snowflakes to a simple wreath and even a minimalist tree–less is still more. I also just love these fiber mini frosted trees and Paper Hanging Star Lantern Indoor Decorations. Try place these decor items on an entryway table or shelves.

I hope todays post gave you some decor ideas for holiday decorating and cozy Christmas decor. Obviously beyond Christmas decor, I hope you can take away some good ideas for small space decorating. The holidays are really about feeling at home during the winter season and making our homes as festive and comforting as can be.
