Finding Inspiration For The Perfect Bedside Table

The key to finding the perfect bedside table for your bedroom is looking at inspirational spaces, photographs, or home designs that you gravitate towards. Whether you’re searching for an industrial chic shelving unit or a traditional night stand, there are plenty of images that can help spark ideas. Take a look around Pinterest, Etsy, Instagram, and other websites for unique ideas that could work in your space. Make sure to take note of the materials used and measurements so you have something to reference when you begin your project.

I knew that I wanted my room to be somewhat focused on simplicity, finishes, textures and materials. These are characteristics that I really pay attention to in interior design and home decor. I really love the look of raw and natural fiber textures and materials like linen and stone in a room with sleek finishes like chrome metal and walnut wood. So I decided to go with a travertine stone bedside table. Since my bedframe is a minimalist white metal frame with a simple beige textile headboard, I knew travertine would look good right beside it. I also thought the rawness of the stone would be a great design element in my interior design.

A bedside table or two not only adds visual balance to a room, but it’s functional to have. Since I am in a smaller room, one bedside table will have to suffice since the bed is up against the window, opposite the big walnut dresser. Having a bedside table is great for a few reasons. It can be used for many purposes such as a place to set your alarm clock, keep books, or display beautiful flowers or a bedside table lamp.

A Dupe For CB2 T Tall Marble Side Table

To finish off the look of my bedroom, I was really leaning towards a contemporary chic side table. After doing some research online, I found that many people were replicating the DIY Travertine side table because it’s incredibly easily, takes only a few items and looks expensive.

I have been lusting over the CB2 T Tall Side Table in marble designed by Studio Anasi for a while. However, for some reason I just can’t justify spending $300 for a piece of furniture that I might like for the moment. And while the table is made of torrento marble and not travertine it’s close enough visually for my liking for the moment. So although it is an expensive piece, there are ways to get a similar look with more affordable materials. The great thing about creating your own bedside table is you can customize it to fit any style or room!

Shopping For The Right Materials

After you’ve gathered some inspiration and ideas it’s time to shop for the right materials! I’ve seen this DIY at least three times before I actually attempted it. I do have to say that my hopes for gluing this table together were very low and I had no faith in that. But luckily I was pleasantly surprised that I DIY project was not only sturdy, but totally obviated the need for any extra reinforcements.

Once you have all the supplies you need it’s time to assemble your DIY bedside table! This can be done in no time at all. The only thing that takes a bit of time is the curing process for the table top. This is when the glue that holds the travertine pieces together needs to dry and set before you can place anything on it. Luckily, this process only takes about 24 hours.

Gathering Materials For Your DIY Bedside Table

Once you’ve got your design ideas down, it’s time to begin gathering the materials you’ll need for your DIY bedside table. Down below were the only items I needed to complete the DIY project.

Three slabs of travertine cost me about $10 a piece and the liquid nails about $4. So for $50 you could have yourself a chic little bedside table.

Items Needed:

  • 3 Slabs of Travertine
  • Liquid Nails

Assembling Your DIY Bedside Table

Now it’s time for the fun part – assembling your chic DIY bedside table! Depending on the design you chose, use the necessary tools and materials to put together the frame of your side table. For this project, I wanted the bedside table height to stand about twenty four inches hight, which was just high enough for my bed.

Standing one of the three slabs vertically you’ll want to measure a halfway point across the slab. I didn’t do this, I actually laid the slab down, which is probably not a good idea in hindsight. Next I took the liquid nails (perfect for most materials: wood, concrete, metal etc) to get the second slab ready to be lined up perpendicularly on that halfway mark. Allow the stone and glue to dry for several minutes before releasing it. Once you’re sure the stone slab won’t move, you can leave it to dry for 30 minutes.

Finally you can come back to finish the final part of the project. Add liquid nails along the surface of the first two stone pieces. Take your third travertine slab and place it horizontally over the two pieces that are connected. Make sure your tabletop is to your pleasing before allowing the glue to dry.

Putting The Finishing Touches On Your Bedside Table

Once your bedside table is assembled, it’s time for the finishing touches! Since putting the table together I’ve had decor books stacked with a vase full of flowers. I’ve styled it with a beautiful chrome dish and candle. I’ve even styled it with some art pieces. I love this table and I think you will too! There are many ways to elevate your home decor and DIYs are a great way to do that, all it takes is a little inspiration!
