The Art Of Colorful Design In Interior Design

Interior designers like Todd Black and Daria Vasilkova show just how easy it is to incorporate vibrant colors into a home. From their bold interior designs styles, to colour drenching and their use of vivid textiles, wallpapers, etc–these interior designers are some of my favorite sources of inspiration for any color-loving decorator.

Even smaller scale interior designer Richard O’Gorman who bought his home during the pandemic, managed to create a colorful haven which focuses on using bright colors and modern decor. His unique style combines beautiful pastels with bold geometric shapes and vibrant color palettes.

From his colorful living room design to his colorful dining room decor, O’Gorman’s colorful home is an inspiring source of ideas. It’s one of many great examples of how colorful interiors are becoming more popular as modern design trends move away from neutral tones.

Which Kind Of Aesthetic Fits A Colorful Home?

There are several interior design aesthetics that a colorful home can embody. Eclectic style creates a unique look with patterns and color combinations. Bohemian interior design combines vibrant colors and textures for a relaxed, playful feel.

Even colorful minimalism, the latest substyle of minimalist interior design– merges colorful shades and simple lines together. By combining colors and textures appropriately, your colorful home interior will look great regardless of the style you are trying to achieve.

Using Colorful Home Decor To Accent Your Interior

The key to adding color to your home if you’re new to this– is doing it in a subtle, tasteful way that suits your style. Start by introducing one or two colors at a time and gradually adding more as you go along. Make sure the colors you choose work together and don’t overpower the space.

And for a more layered look, combine bright colors with neutrals and different shades of the same hue. Pay attention to the different shades of a color, its tones and tints. You can also combine contrasting colors for an exciting look, such as black and white or red and blue.

Finally, don’t forget to use different textures in each room – velvet pillows, patterned rugs, or painted furniture – for an added layer of depth.

By adding these colorful touches to your home, you can easily create an inviting atmosphere that’s full of personality. With the right mix of colors and textures, you can transform any room into a brighten vibrant haven that reflects your style!

How To Use Color In Your Home:

Break Up A Monochromatic Scheme or Neutral Space With Color

If you’re living in a black and white monochromatic or neutral-colored home, adding color is an easy way to make the space lively. From negative space on your walls to the minimal furniture in your living room, add color. This will not only add interest, but it will also create a focal point in the room.

Start by introducing small pops of vibrant colors. In a minimalist or neutral color scheme, I’d be more inclined to add color by way of art on the walls or in a piece of furniture in my living room. If you haven’t check out my last post on the different ways Scandinavian design incorporates color, then make sure you do!

For example a beautiful abstract pink framed wall art print would be eye catching in a monochrome room. Another example might be a green sofa in a neutral living room.

In my own bedroom which is somewhat neutral and minimalist for now, I love my pastel blue bedding and colorful accent decor. You can add colorful accents like pillows, rugs and artwork to your existing decor. Elevate that all white kitchen into something special with character.

Layer color and pattern for an uplifting living space

The use of overlapping shapes and vibrant colors create a rhythm that is a great way to design interiors. By layering colors in a patchwork style and combining the same color with different patterns and prints, such as colour drenching–a visually appealing look can be achieved. This allows for a dynamic look, which is sure to add an interesting element to any home.

Layering colors includes the color that might be on your walls to the color of your furniture down to your home accent pieces. Perhaps you have a green accent wall or wallpaper in your living room, but fuschia pink home accessories and a bright blue accent chair. The combinations of colors and making sure they are complimentary to each other is something to keep in mind.

I think rugs are a great item to layer and also a great way to layer color and also bring some warm textiles to living rooms and bedrooms. They’re also a changeable home item that would be easy to switch out. Think eclectic or maximalist interior design when you think of how to layer color in your home.

Incorporate colorful wall art that is bright, bold, and full of life

Artwork is a powerful way to express ourselves and add life to our living spaces. If you’re looking to incorporate some vibrant and lively artwork into your home, consider a vibrant painting or print that is bright and bold.

A painting bursting with bold color, can be the perfect thing to hang in a negative space or a white wall. I love pockets of color as much as I love to see colorful homes designed and decorated by an interior designer.

Bold colors and striking patterns can bring energy and excitement to a room, and may even inspire you to embrace a more colorful approach to life. Whether you choose abstract pieces or ones that feature recognizable subjects, seek out artwork that speaks to you and brings joy to your daily life.
