As the temperatures start to drop and we spend more time inside, our thoughts naturally turn to fall decor and cozy living. And who better to look for inspiration than the Danes with their hygge home interiors?
Are you looking to add some hygge elements to your home to make it more cozy and inviting? If so, today we’re giving you a checklist of hygge decor items to help you elevate your small living space into a cozy hygge home for the season.
Hygge is a way of being and a way of living that is centered around creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s all about being present in the moment, enjoying simple living, and surrounded by things that make you happy. A hygge home is a reflection of that philosophy and should be a space that is comfortable, cozy, and inviting.
For a lot of us that means living in a cozy and comforting home. And what is more cozy than a danish apartment design? Hygge interior design is an amazing and simple interior style to draw inspiration from, especially for small living spaces. Incorporating elements of warmth and comfort, texture, relaxation and true intentional living above all–there’s plenty to be inspired by when it comes to the hygge lifestyle.
What is Hygge?
While we will be looking at the various ways to incorporate actual hygge décor elements into your home, it’s important that we first understand what it is.
Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is a Danish word that is more than a trend to the Danish people, it’s an unknowing lifestyle.
While many of us now attribute this décor buzz word to home décor and home life, simply put the word translates to quality time. It’s no wonder we have an obsession with hygge; quality time is something we all long for.
Examples of hygge could be anything from enjoying a cup of coffee with a friend to sitting by the fire and reading a book. Much like the hygge lifestyle, in this blog we explore how intentional living and hygge interior design go hand-in-hand. The concept of spending your time intentionally is the first thing you should understand about hygge life.
Hygge is not actually confined to a season either. For Danes, hygge is a subconscious way of being, simple living. It’s probably associated to colder temperatures for those of us that are not Danish, because the colder seasons are typically when we tend to take more time to hibernate. When we hibernate and stay inside, we tend to spend more quality time with loved ones or doing things we enjoy.
What it comes down to is intentional living and spending quality time anywhere that you are. When we are talking about hygge in terms of interior decorating and home design, we should probably focus on the element of creating an atmosphere in our living spaces. So two things to take away from the hygge lifestyle is intentional living and atmosphere.

Soft lighting is an essential element in hygge home decorating. Natural light can accomplish this with light filtering curtains. And candles easily accomplish this by bringing in so much warmth into an environment. Light lots of candles or a hygge lamp like a mushroom lamp can be a great addition to your interior space. You can hardly walk into any Danish home without seeing some sort of element of nature. Nature and natural materials in fact, plays such a large role in the Danish life as well as their interior style. You may notice lots of natural materials in the home such as natural wood in the home or even vases filled with twigs and branches, pinecones etc.
Surrounded by such breathtaking landscaping, it’s quite common to be enveloped in nature and it’s probably what contributes to the wellness of most Danes. Bring nature into your living room decor, your bedroom decor and even your kitchen to create that true earthiness of the outdoors and let the natural elements amplify your hygge at home atmosphere.
#3 ENJOY A COZY CORNER
Also known as a hyggekrog, adding a cozy element to your small spaces is another way to hygge your home. A cozy nook or corner in your home where you can wrap yourself up in a blankets and throws, read a book and enjoy the moment, is essential to hygge life. After-all, hygge is about enjoying the quality time you spend however you choose to spend it. So find your special corner in your space and fill it with pillows, blankets, candles and something delicious to drink.
#4 SWITCH TO COZY TEXTURES
Change up your textures and fabrics to add to the already cozy aesthetic. It’s hard to get into the hygge mood with satin sheets and cooling comforters so grab your blankets and throws! A hygge bedroom is full of a variety of textures textures like chunky wool blankets and flannel sheets. And as if your interior is mostly a neutral color than adding some texture will do just the trick. So how do you cozy up your space with texture? So how do you cozy up your space with texture?
Start with your bedding, then incorporate some sheepskin rugs in front of the fireplace or at the foot of your bed. If you want to get really hygge, purchase an Alpaca throw blanket for those additional tactile elements like faux sheepskin rugs and plush throw blankets are another way to create a hygge atmosphere. This will make it all too easy to curl up and take an afternoon nap.
#5 CREATE A FIREPLACE
One of the most important elements in creating a cozy home is the warmth in the room. Whether you have an antique fireplace mantle or an electric fireplace insert it should be easy enough to create that center of warmth in your home. There’s something about decorating a living room with a fireplace that just instantly makes me feel all warm inside.
Fireplaces are an amazing feature in any home. They immediately draw you into a space and fill the room with warmth. If you don’t have a fireplace then even a mantle filled with candles or an electric fireplace will do. You want to create a space that will lend to be a focal point in the home. A fireplace is always great to huddle around.
#6 CREATE HYGGE HABITS
Creating rituals or hygge habits is another thing to note in regards to nailing the cozy aesthetic. However, if you are Danish these things are second nature and not necessarily hygge habits. Spending quality doing something that brings about feelings of enjoyment is what it’s really all about. In valuing that time you’re more likely to be more intentional about these moments that you have. Additionally, you’ll be able to see how it is that you can add hygge to your home and style a space to elevate those moments of quality time.
There are many ways you can create hygge habits in your day-to-day life. Whether you are enjoying your morning coffee, spending time with family or off relaxing and listening to music, quality time is the only rule to this interior style.
Fireplaces should probably be scrapped as an idea, coal and wood burning fires and stoves are really high pollutants, more so than most modern cars and HGVs. The other ideas sound nice if that’s your esthetic
I love candles and fireplaces so much! During the winter, I try and have a fire going at least once a week or more – it just always makes me feel relaxed.
I love the idea of creating a nice cozy reading space with hygge. And I can always use a reason to buy more candles!
I love the look of all the natural elements in these photos, especially the wood. I’ve picked up some lovely used wood accent tables and they give a warm vibe to the environment. Plus the classic lines are soothing.
Candles and plants are a fantastic way to add more texture at home! It’s also fun to have a cozy corner to sit around when you need to think. Fantastic ideas! Love the pictures too.
