2022 Interior Design Trends We’re Loving

As we’ve spent the last year and a half confined to our homes, a growing desire to elevate our living spaces is evident in interior design trends. But which interior design trends are really worth fawning over?

In 2022 interior design trends are being impacted by a more mindful and intentional approach to creating aesthetic living spaces. There’s an obvious connection to living spaces and the experiences people are having in those spaces. Trends are bringing multifunctional living spaces to the front and center. Sculptural furniture continues to make it’s mark and may be sticking around for a while. A throwback to the use of more natural materials and also quality craftsmanship seems to be coming back for good too. Overall an appreciation for the home space is on the rise.

Calm Neutrals

The correlation between interior design and emotional connectivity is huge and we see that with the use of calming neutrals. More and more people want to create a tranquil atmosphere and are starting to care about how the ambiance in their home makes them feel. Forest Homes does a great article that touches on the relationship between interior design and psychology. It’s quite interesting to note how we respond to interior design and it’s definitely a great trend to pay attention to especially as it relates to designing our own personal space.

Designing living spaces to evoke a specific emotional feeling is a great perspective to adopt when thinking about how you style your small living space. Incorporating colors that elicit feelings of peace and serenity is huge in interior design. Calm neutrals are wonderful options for maximizing small living spaces when you don’t want to go for the harshness of white walls from floor to ceiling.

Sculptural Furniture

With neutrals as the perfect backdrop, statement furnishings are demanding more and more attention. Sculptural furniture is a term used to describe this new trend and it’s making a lot of noise in home interior design. As the name implies, it is in reference to furniture pieces that take on an almost sculptural form. It serves more than just its purpose, it also serves to be a piece of art in the home. We’re seeing a movement back to functionality yes, but also towards a need for home decor and furniture to go beyond simple practicality.

Furnishings are having a moment again and are standing out in their own right by drawing focus. More and more individuals are choosing to invest in quality craftsmanship versus fast furniture. And yet even fast furnishings are never too far behind when it comes to producing low cost options for current trends. Sculptural furniture can be a great trend to follow especially in a small living space as you would want to choose a few impactful pieces to elevate your space as a whole.

Soft Curves

Soft curving lines are just about everywhere and we’re totally here for it in 2022. Home interior trends are all about these curved lines and curvy forms and we see it in various forms. From the curvature of arched dressers to the soft curved sectional sofa and accent chairs, even arched mirrors, curves are causing quite a storm in interior design. Curved furniture or sculptural furniture as was aforementioned, has been one trend that has both had its peak once before and is now making a comeback and it’s a hard one to miss.

This can be a great home interior trend to elevate small living spaces too. Round and curved furniture takes up less space and at the same time can create an impact to any room.

Multifunctional Spaces

Throughout the pandemic a need to divy up living spaces became increasingly crucial as the masses were working from home or home schooling. Functionality in these living spaces also became more and more important. Multifunctional living spaces are important when you are living in a small living space and it’s a great interior trend for 2022 and even beyond. Breaking up with the concept of open living spaces, we’re now pivoting towards creating multi spaces that are livable.

Also the experience in each of those spaces is equally as important. From the bedroom to the dining area to the cozy corner spaces, the value of utilizing spaces is so much higher now. Check out our post on 10 Reasons To Decorate A Small Space Like A Boutique Hotel to get some inspiration and tips on making the most out of these individual spaces. Small living spaces especially studio apartments which often have an open floor plan –can really benefit from this trend.

Black Accent

Black has never really left as the star color and still seems to permeate throughout various interior styles. However, now we see black as the accent color of choice in the current trends and probably even going forward. Be it in hardware or home accessories, an accent wall, window trimming–black is making a statement in interior design trends in an effective way.

Decorative Elements

Another interior design trend we’re loving is the attention to decorative elements and architectural detail. From arched doorways to arched window frames, even built-in shelving, the arch form has taken center stage. Just as popular is the use of some form of wall trimming and molding. People are looking to elevate and create an impact to their walls and wall trims are definitely one way to do that.

Small living spaces can totally benefit from these sort of details. Elevating your wall space by adding trims or moulding can transform the space entirely.

Natural Materials

The desire to choose materials that are more sustainable and natural is also an interior trend that is taking 2022 by the reigns. Homes are peeling back a bit and are going the more warm and natural route. There’s an obviously greater appreciation for natural materials, natural lighting and colors too. Homes are also incorporating more plant life into spaces adding another element that breathes life back into a space. We see lots of linens and stones, woods and textured woods.

This particular interior trend can be a great way to make small living spaces feel elevated and well thought out. Filling your available space with materials that are sustainable is not only for aesthetic purposes, but it speaks to the act of being more intentional with our living spaces and within ourselves. Being mindful and intentional in our choices can definitely elevate both the interior design and the experience in our homes.
